The Rise And Rise Of Plastic Surgery

By Francois L. Botha

Plastic surgery is here to stay. There can be no denying the fact that cosmetic enhancement very much part of today's lifestyle - not only among celebrities in the entertainment and modeling industries, but also, increasingly, among the modern men and women in the street.

Once the domain of the rich and famous, plastic surgery was something which few were able to afford. Those who could made sure it was all kept 'hush-hush'.

Today boob jobs are compared at dinner parties, liposuction techniques are debated on over lunch and in certain circles plastic surgery is given from parents to their daughters as graduation gifts.

A reported one in two young women who participated in a recent survey in the UK say they would seriously consider going under the knife in order to enhance or change their appearance. Figures released by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) show an increase of 90% in one of the most popular cosmetic procedures, liposuction, in 2006. The Association, which is based at the Royal College of Surgeons, said breast surgery and nose jobs are also seeing a rise in demand.

So what has changed? What is contributing to the soaring demands for plastic surgery in the Western world?

According to Douglas McGeorge, president of BAAPS and a consultant plastic surgeon, the figures reflect "the growing acceptance of aesthetic surgery, particularly in the areas of body contouring and anti-ageing." He attributes the trend, at least partially, to " the continued media coverage which provides the public with an idea of what surgical procedures can achieve," and also, importantly, to "technological advances that improve safety and reduce costs."

So the main contributing factors seem to be

• Less restrictive costs
• Greater safety
• The altered perceptions of the public

Increase in demand has led to increase in supply and this has of course helped reduce the costs of most cosmetic procedures dramatically.

Not only is money being poured into ongoing research to improve methods and increase safety, but also many procedures can now be offered without the need for general anesthetic and clients can be seen over a lunch break, or at least not kept in overnight with many of the more minor surgeries.

With more and more celebrities being open about the procedures they've had, the image of plastic surgery is no longer considered freaky or unnatural. While certain well-known examples such as Michael Jackson gave the public a rather unappetizing impression, nowadays it is perceived as glamorous, acceptable and even desirable to enhance what Mother Nature gave you - and to be proud of the results.

While surgeons and psychologists are quick to point out that plastic surgery should be seen as an enhancement, rather than a cure-all or permanent fix, there's no getting away from the fact that you're going to feel a lot more self-confident with a smaller nose if you've always been aware of an exceptionally large one, or perkier breasts and a flatter tummy if child-birth and breast feeding has taken its toll on your body.

The increase in popularity of plastic surgery can be viewed in a positive light, where individuals feel freer to change what they are able to without shame or embarrassment.
