Breast reconstruction after mastectomy is a very common procedure. There are two operations to reconstruct the breast, which can be used separately or combined:

  • Using breast implants- Tissue expander is being inserted and from time to time the surgeon injects saline solution into the expander. This takes months until the expender reaches its desirable size. Then the expander is being replaced with more permanent implant. Breast reconstruction requires multiple operations and takes time. The operation also includes reformation of the areola and the nipple.
  • Tissue flap- Using the person's tissues from other parts of the body, such as: buttocks, back, abdomen, and thighs. The tissue may stay connected to the source or separated from its origin and reattached in the new position. Like the other procedure, this procedure also requires time and several operations, also to reformat the nipple and areola.

Risks of Breast Reconstruction Plastic Surgery:

Risks are no different then breast augmentation risks, which are: Bleeding, Infection, Pain, problems with breastfeeding, and asymmetric appearance. Breast reconstruction can also involve hardening of the scar tissue around the implants, but with the new technology today this is less frequent.

Tips for Breast Reconstruction Plastic Surgery:

  • Choose only certified clinics and look for as much information you can find about the clinic, the surgeon and the procedure.
  • Check for benefits, risks and complications of the procedure.
  • The doctor will decide if you are compatible for the operation, considering your health and medical condition.
  • Recovery from breast implants reconstruction is faster then the tissue flap one, but you have to consult with the doctor and choose the right procedure for you.
  • The breast reconstruction procedure requires time and several operations.
  • Recovery from breast reconstruction takes 3-6 weeks minimum.
  • 3-6 weeks after the surgery it is forbidden to do sports and have sex.
  • You might need to have a breast surgery on your other breast as well for symmetry.
  • Chemotherapy and radiation therapy may affect the healing process and therefore affect the physical and cosmetic results.
  • The breast reconstruction is only a cosmetics treatment and is not needed to treat the cancer. The woman can choose if she wants to have to procedure.
  • The breast reconstruction can be operated right after the mastectomy or can also be postponed by weeks to years after.
  • Make sure you get all the information you need from the doctor: what to expect, how many operations you will need, how long it will take, what happens if you are not satisfied with the results, and more.
  • Search the web and ask the clinic for photos so you will know what to expect.
